Virtual Trees

Natalie Jeremijenko uses an ecological theme and advanced computer programming to create art that is both visually appealing and intellectually stimulating.  In A-trees uses a complicated algorithm to make the virtual tree grow based on real time carbon dioxide readings from the room in which the computer sits.  In Stump, she uses a virus to tell the computer to print out a picture of a stump every time the amount of paper used by the computer reaches the equivalent of a medium-sized tree.  The contrast between the feelings between A-trees and Stump is also very interesting.  While one cherishes life, the other reminds us of death.

What is fascinating about Jeremijenko's work is how it can be appreciated at so many levels.  Initially what drew me to use her work was the aesthetic of her lovely tree, but upon further research what caught my interest was how smart it all was. She links technology and ecology in a way that mimics real life in a very unreal way.
