The purpose of art is to inspire others. Whether this is emotionally or physically, if it stops people and makes them think then it has done its job. Just like Höller’s slides, which inspire people to experience them and discuss them, they don’t have to necessarily be the quintessential painting, but as long as they have a concept behind them it is art. I think the concept is really what defines the purpose of art; the metaphor or meaning to the artist makes it meaningful and therefore beautiful.
